Must admit I haven't used the parking brake in 8 days of ownership. Just use 'park' on the auto box. Even started using 'P' at night at traffic lights to avoid blinding following drivers with the LED tail lights. My halo is strangling me!!
Now: niro 2 (red)
Previous cars:
Citroen C3 Picasso (auto)
Renault grand scenic 1.5dci on 17" wheels (awful)

Necessary? Well, it's strictly not necessary. However, it's still a good idea. The 'park' mode on your transmission sticks a piece of metal into the gearing so that the transmission can't turn. The entire weight of the car can end up resting on this small piece of metal.

Using the handbrake also uses brake pressure to keep the car in place. And brakes are MUCH cheaper than transmissions.
