Hi, I just tried to start the Niro and it won't recognise the key fob. Had to push the start button with the fob itself. Then got a check brakes message, so car won't start. Now I can't turn off the AV system, or lock the car. Any idea's?

To avoid this I have a JumpStart in my Niro.

Hi all, I had a similar experience with my 2017 hybrid Niro. Just when the covid restrictions were being eased I did a few shortish journeys ( longest 50 miles), without any problems. 2 days later wanted to move the car out of garage and it refused to 'start' in EV or engine mode. No dashboard signs of lack of power ( dimming or blank screens), just that the immobiliser icon stayed lit.
Car was left in garage for 2 hours while I had lunch and surprise later found that the car stated as normal, except that I had to hold the key, in ignition start position, for more than 5 seconds before it activated everything.
This happened 2 weeks later except that it restarted after only 1/2 hour with similar lack of any dash board light problems except the anti lock brake light flashed a few times and the TPMS warning light flash. as well!
I was not able to get the car checked over by the dealer for 2 weeks due to their work load, however once they had the car they diagnosed likely problem was 12 volt battery internal cell failure, with intermittent shorting or similar causing intermittent non start.
I was not impressed that the OEM battery had lasted barely 3 years ( warranty as you know. in 2yrs only) its had an easy life only 20K miles etc .
I shall not be buying a KIA approved battery but getting a decent make with 4 or 5 yr warranty for about 2/3 the price !

Some user are reporting a bad closing tailgate for a battery down and a keyfob too near by the car over night so it's making constantly communication with the car ...

Hi, interesting Gerd_NL. No experience of keyless systems but you would of thought that some kind of sleep mode would work after 20 mins if this drainage could occur!
Your comments about tailgate being left unclosed! I have done this several times without any harm, since after about 20 mins the boot light is turned off by some protection system. (2017 niro hybrid) Has this feature been removed on !ater versions? Kona vehicles (EV director) mention this problem as well!
Also mentioned was the USB socket for Android and Apple auto as remaining live after car was exited and locked?
On my vehicle this also goes dead after a few mins too.
Not sure why these kia/Hyundia models seem so different in systems set up!

Hi all. Update on 27/8 report!
Battery replaced and managed to remove necessary part of hatch trim to access battery fixing bolts, without breaking anything. Having done some reading on the OEM Korean battery ( Delkor) history it seems this unit is/has caused a number of problems within its cell structure. Though i feel that the lack of regular daily usage, during lockdown, has not helped the longevity of the battery; fewer charging sessions, longer periods standing idle, I am surprised the battery has not lasted longer. Dealership told me that they had plenty in-stock ; really , does that also mean plenty are also failing!!!
Needless to say I did not buy the same unit again and have purchased one online for 1/2 the price, better spec and twice the warranty.
