Just taken possession of my Kia Niro GDi 4. Goodness me, even the bells and whistles have bells and whistles. Migrated to the Niro from an Audi A3 Cabriolet. Lovely car but a 'dirty diesel' they said...odd that road tax in the Audi is £30 per annum while it's £130 in the eco friendly Kia. Something wrong there... I look forward to answers to the many questions I will have in the weeks and months ahead. Firstly, what does GDi stand for. For a panic stricken moment I wondered if I'd bought a diesel/electric hybrid!! :o

Apparently GDi stands for "Gasoline Direct Injection" to differentiate it from multipoint injection.

I understand that the engine in the Niro is the Atkinson Cycle variant of the Hyundai Kappa III engine.

Gasoline Direct Injection operates at high pressure, injecting directly into the cylinder. This gives much better control, power, economy and
lower emissions than a more common (until recently) Multipoint Injection system.

Multipoint injection operates at low pressure, and is injected via the rail and valve ports into the cylinder head. The fuel flows into the cylinder over the back of the valves, and the detergents in the fuel dissolve any carbon deposits, keeping the valves and valve seats clean. Most of those deposits are a result of the oil and incomplete combustion products recirculated via the crankcase ventilation system.

However, with GDi, the fuel bypasses the valves, so they don't get cleaned in this way, and, it seems that there are real problems with older GDi engines - loss of fuel economy, and performance, pre-ignition, etc. The US Kia forum has a number of 2011 Rio owners bemoaning the loss of mpg and performance as their cars get older, but I haven't seen any in the UK forums yet. Hopefully the Kappa III engine won't suffer as badly as the earlier Gamma engine in that model of Rio.

Hi Leelec, What was the time from order to delivery on your GDi 4?

I bought a 'nearly new' (28 miles on the clock) so it was on the forecourt. Saw it Monday, owned it Wednesday.
