A well known motor magazine recently compared the Niro 2 to the Toyota Prius Business edition. The following is a summary of their findings, in order of importance to me.

Prius. NIro
Cost. £24195. £22795
Warranty. 5 years (100,000 miles). 7 years (100,000 miles)
Main battery warranty. 5 years. 7 years
Fuel consumption on test. 57.8 59.6
Official combined figure. 91.1 74.3
Noise level dB @ 30 mile/h. 62 60
dB @ 70 mile/h. 73 69
Autonomous Braking (AEB) Standard. £350
3 years servicing £557 £429
Boot capacity (seats up). 343 litres. 373 litres
CO2 official figure. 70 88
CO actual measured. 113 109
Acceleration (0 to 60 mile/h). 10.3s 9.2s
" ( 30 to 70 mile/h). 9.8s 8.7s
Drag factor (Cd) 0.24 0.29
Top speed (mile/h). 112 101
Turning circle (m) 10.2 10.6
Kerb weight (kg). 1375 1566
Sat - Nav £750 Standard

I have the greatest respect for Toyota, and assuming my figures are correct, which one would you go for?

A factor critical to me is the ease of getting in and out for us oldies with limited bendability. A high seated car with wide doors is a must.

The Toyota fails. That's why I have ordered a Niro

Things like drag factor, kerb weight and top speed are only of academic interest to me. Comfort, ease of driving, luggage capacity, fuel economy and maintenance costs are my priorities.

I find It hard to believe the top speed of the niro only 101mph. I have seen posts on YouTube showing much more than this.

Using the gear ratios stated in the Niro brochure for the two tyre sizes used on the Niro, I calculate that the speeds
in each gear at 2500 rpm engine revs are as follows

............... 205 60 R16........225 45 R18
Gear 1..... 11 mph............11.2 mph
Gear 2..... 19 mph............19.3 mph
Gear 3..... 32 mph........... 32.5 mph
Gear 4..... 47 mph............47.8 mph
Gear 5...... 62 mph....... ...63 mph
Gear 6..... 77 mph...... ..78 mph (at a speed of 101 mph the engine revs would be 3300 rpm)

I guess that in the interest of economy, the Atkinson cycle petrol engine does not develop enough grunt to rev beyond roughly 3500 rpm in gear 6.

Not really taken a lot of notice of gear changing. Suspicion that maybe gear 6 is more accessible when using cruise control, though just a seat of the pants hunch.
