The postings have been most helpful - I thought it was either me or my particular car. It is those moments when the car seems to be thinking!!
Mind you the handbook does say about it improving itself over the first 1000 miles !!

Still not used to brakes not releasing especially when gently nearly stopping and then accelerating.

Have you put the car in neutral when you are stopped? I believe this cancels the hill-assist.

Not tried that - will do - but sometimes it is when the car has not stopped ie coming up to red lights which change just as you about stop.

No, for the most recent occurrence I was driving up a slight hill (about 1 in 12 at a guess) in stop- start traffic; there is a junction just at the top of the hill. It was definitely still in drive but when I took my foot off the brake the car immediately rolled backwards so I had to quickly reapply the brake to avoid hitting the car behind us.

The manual says hill-assist assist will work with ESC off, but not if there is a malfunction of the ESC. The manual isn't always accurate, is your ESC on? Have you switched any other safety aids off? If you have, this might be the problem. I have everything on, and my hill-assist works fine.

ESC is on. everything else just as it was delivered. Just have to be alert and keep foo ton pedal until ready to move off.

Ditto; I have not turned anything off and besides, it is an infrequent intermittent issue so more characteristic of a glitch.

What do you mean "keep your foot on the pedal until ready to move off"? - that's what you're supposed to do....
