Economy??

After one week of owning the Kia Niro 4, I check the mpg and am horrified :o to find that I have averaged just 37mpg. Now I confess that, at the moment, there is much I don't understand about this car - the combined manuals contain more text than any standard degree course - but is there something I could be doing that is obviously wrong? I'm not a boy racer; I would say my driving style is comparatively gentle and I try to keep the needle firmly in the green so to speak. I rarely see the EV light illuminated. Any thoughts please, gratefully accepted.

I am a Niro 4 owner too. Had the car since June last year. In the summer months, my car averaged around 55 mpg. But since the cold weather set in, it dropped to mid 30 mpg.

Is everyone else experiencing similar drop in mpg in the colder weather?

Hi, I’ve got a Niro 4, 18in alloys
Mostly short commute. In summer around 53 mpg, winter I’m getting @ 42 mpg.
That with heated seat, and steering wheel on and air con to defrost.
Not bad, and really appreciate the fast demist and heated bits!

Many seem to have been delivered with the units set to US gallons. So that setting is worth checking. Otherwise, I believe that it takes a couple of thousand miles for the engine to loosen up so I expect your economy will improve significantly by the summer. Check your tyre pressures. The cold weather will have reduced them and that will have a significant effect on the economy.

My PHEV with its 16" wheels is achieving about 28 miles on pure electric, and when in HEV mode still appears to be achieving 60mpg. Both figures are only about 10% down on what it achieved before it got cold. I really cannot complain.

We got ours (Niro 4) new in September, average driving style, got around 63 to the gallon. Now in winter this has gone down to 50. But it is noticeable that the same journey on a cold or warm day will give very different mpg. Also starting from cold the displayed figure will drop steadily for the first 10 miles or so , then stabilise, then start to go up as the journey goes on, in other words as the engine warms up. It really needs a journey of about 25 miles to start to see good figures.

Hi all.
Any one who gets below 40mpg in UK, must have the settings wrong on the user options in distance units type.
It is difficult to get below 50mpg even in winter (below freezing) unless you do a lot of short journeys, drive very aggressively and have heating on full all the time. Check your settings and reset the mpg history to 0

After waiting 4 months my Niro was delivered in the middle of Jan. On Thursday drove from Crawley to Chichester and back and the system recorded a mpg of 58.8 with 86% economic driving and 14% normal

Please don't despair with one or two low MPG readings which are quite easy to achieve during the winter and particularly if you do short runs when the engine has not fully got up to temperature.

I have a Niro 4 and depending on the type of journey often get figures over 60MPG particularly having reset the MPG reading before setting out. However short runs into town on a cold engine will drop the MPG into the 30s! Clearly driving style is crucial here in getting the engine to stop in favour of the electric motor and these cars really do respond to your driving style.

I have to say I am delighted with my Niro and have even managed to get the tree fully lit on several occasions and seen some runs heading into 70 plus MPG, it really is down to driving style (and being unwilling to pay for more fuel!!)

One thing I have noticed is that with gentle driving the computer is even happy to use the electric motor at quite high speed ie. 50 -70. although this obviously depends on overall driving load conditions.

It will make a massive difference this time of year on journeys of less than 15 miles especially if your car is not garaged as the engine will run on my PHEV for quite a time & all it is doing is warming & demisting the interior. Significant standing water / slush has reduced my Motorway EV range to 17 miles once & that was sensible driving.

i agree its really droped off with cold weather also tyre presures seem to effect as well. mine was set to us gallons so def chk that
mines niro 4 with 16 inch wheels which also made a diff from 18 inch also cheaper road tax as well. in summer it was brilliant
