Minor downsides of the Niro's specification

Post by niroal » Mon Mar 04, 2019 8:02 am

Our daughter has just turned 17 and have found one or two minor flaws to the car.

I bought both magnetic & inside window L plates and thought that would cover all situations.

Firstly putting one on the bonnet it wouldn't grip, thought the bonnet was too wet as it was raining, but then remembered aluminium bonnet so one plate inside front window. Then round the back - tailgate aluminium too, and the window one was ok, but not ideal as the privacy glass made it a little hidden.

Little things that never occur to you when you buy a car!!!

I thought the tailgate was plastic?

Anyway, you’re a braver person than me letting a 17 year old learner into the driving seat of a car as valuable as a Niro!

The biggest scare for me is the lack of an available handbrake, but she did really well over the 29 miles we drove.

When I taught my 3 to drive, there were a couple of occasions when I had to emergency stop the car on the handbrake. Not so much at the outset; more when they started to get (over) confident, and once when my daughter tried to stop and stamped on the accelerator by mistake!

I don't think its safe to teach in a Niro without fitting dual controls as your only means of stopping the car would be to slam it into "Park". That would be a bit drastic (and potentially leave you with a big repair bill).

I was only planning on use the Niro for the next week or so as she is only having a couple of Auto lessons before she moves on to a manual car. Our Ka+ is a manual with a handbrake!!
