Emergency braking feature

Post by aubreyd » Thu May 31, 2018 4:19 pm

Hi there
Has anyone had reason to see if this works?
I’ve ticked the box in the setup menu, but I not sure if it is working, a pedestrian ran in front of the car yesterday, and nothing happened, luckily he just managed to avoid me.
I’m now wondering if this car has emergency city braking.

Any thoughts would be welcomed.

When I had a Volvo XC60 that had City Safety, I tested it with some cardboard. It worked perfectly. You could use that method with your Niro without the risk of damage.

I very much doubt it would react quickly enough to detect a pedestrian running suddenly across your car, who would only be in the detection zone for a very short period of time. I believe it needs to be something fairly substantial in front of you that your car is approaching, such as a stationary or slow-moving car ahead of you. I think if the system was too sensitive it would be operating the brakes on all sorts of false alarms! I tested my previous Ford Focus using a large empty cardboard box at 20mph, and it worked very late, but I still hit the box albeit at much reduced speed, almost stopped. I've not had chance to test my Niro yet but it would probably be the same.

Hi aubyerd.
The other option to test surely is to set the maximum distance it responds at, I think there is at least 3?. This will give you the option to brake manualy if no response. The response is also related to speed of travel I think. I am sure the manual gives set up instruction s

I can confirm that the emergency braking does work as I had an issue with a car pulling out from a side road, the driver obviously not seeing me and the car within a split second applied the brake to avoid what could have been a collision. So from my point highly pleased that the detection system worked but as for a pedestrian it could be a different ball game but the Niro brochure does suggest it should work.

I was in the second lane of a 4 lane section on a motorway and had the emergency braking operate when a car cut across two lanes and come within a few of feet of the front of my car (and a car I had just overtaken) to exit late at a motorway junction. It all happened so quickly I did not hit the brakes before the AEB did.

I sent the car cam footage which clearly showed the near miss to the police - but got no feed back.

The AEB was fierce and it was a good job I wasn't being tailgated at the time. The AEB continued to operate well after the idiot was well to my left, resulting in the car dropping from about 65 to less than 40 before the brakes were released and I could accelerate again. The car I had been overtaking was well ahead afterwards - I guess the driver didn't brake but got away with it.

Thanks for the info.
It seems it does work, hope I’m never in a position to see it in action!
