Newbie--John Way

Post by johnsparton » Thu Apr 18, 2019 5:43 pm

Hello everyone,
New to forum but owned a Niro hybrid since August last year. This one purely re charges battery off the engine. Best mpg 74 but to be fair that was Norfolk, flat narrow roads around 40mph.
I have noticed around town normal motoring around 60 plus mpg. This does vary according to the temperature. the colder it is the poorer the mpg. As others have found, flick the switch to sport mode and a different motor.
Very good value, comfortable drive, plenty of room. Have to see how it goes, not convinced electric is was ahead, used to have diesel but will prob stay with petrol

Hi John, I have had a self-charging Niro HEV for almost three years now. I had one of the first available in 2016. But I am not aware of a 'sport switch' to flick anywhere on my car. Where is the sport switch on your car ?

I do have the side-shift manual over-ride on the auto gear stick, of course, but no sport switch so far as I can see.

Maybe there was an update between 2016 and 2018 ?

Hello, mine is a 2017 model. When you flick the auto gear stick to the right even the dashboards says SPORTMODE. Think there is a marking on the plate at base of stick as well.
in sports mode you are using the 1.6 petrol TURBO engine to capacity when required. The dash board has different colored lights, ie bright orange as well. There is a very noticeable change in performance in sports mode, very responsive.

OK John, I have that - never quite thought of it that way.

Yes, I use it a lot and using that doesn't take the eco/normal/aggressive driving needle into the aggressive section as it would if I simply put my toe down in automatic. Very useful for getting off and around cars and lorries for overtaking !

A great car - so much so I am just about to order my second one for September delivery - the New Niro HEV4 in Runway Red with 10.25" display.

Cool !

Thanks,

Peter.

I have looked at all the self-charging hybrids on the market (I didn't want a plug in or totally electric car) and I really found that KIA gave excellent value for money in the end considering hi-spec, comfort, economy etc. With the others, they were either too high that my short legged wife couldn't get in and out comfortably, whereas she is fine in the Niro. Or their design was so radical (Toyota CHR) that I couldn't drive a Batmobile. We even started to look at petrol-only cars but she couldn't get into and out of the Peugeot 3008 which was otherwise a very attractive option.

Finally we discovered the Mitsubishi range - the Outlander PHEV was too big but they did have the Eclipse Cross. A Crossover but, unfortunately not a Hybrid as the PHEV. It had a 1.5 litre Turbo petrol engine but it only returns 30mpg on average and was £855 first year tax !!!! Although it is a very sexy car with some interesting bells and whistles it did NOT have some of the stuff that is on the Niro4 as standard at the very same price !

So then, just as I was getting excited about the Eclipse, my KIA salesman rang to say that the New Niro was announced for the UK with prices and colour options. That changed my mind in hours !

I am just waiting for leasing quotes and I will place my order this week for delivery, hopefully, by September.
